How to Receive XMR in a Monero Wallet: Address, Sync and Payout Checks

To receive XMR from an exchange, prepare a wallet or platform account that explicitly supports native Monero. Copy an address from its XMR receive screen, verify it in the order and then watch the payout and wallet sync separately. A sent payout can exist on-chain before a wallet displays its updated balance.

Prepare the Monero Receiving Wallet

Choose a self-custody Monero wallet if you control the keys, or use a platform's XMR deposit instructions if you need the platform to credit your account. Do not use an Ethereum, Bitcoin or wrapped-token address for a native XMR payout.

Self-Custody: Make a Receive Address

Open the wallet's Receive view. A fresh subaddress is a practical default for a new payer because it keeps that incoming payment separate in your records and reduces off-chain linking from address reuse. Label it for the order if your wallet allows labels; copy the address or QR code directly from the wallet.

Custodial Platform: Read Its Deposit Rules

Choose XMR on the platform's deposit screen and use its current address or integrated-address instructions. Review any minimum deposit and account-crediting conditions. A Monero transaction reaching the platform's address and an account balance appearing in its UI are separate events.

Receive XMR from an Exchange Step by Step

  1. Open the destination wallet's XMR receive or deposit screen and copy the current address.
  2. Paste it into the exchange form, then compare the start, middle and end with the original wallet display.
  3. Enter the sending asset and amount, choose the rate mode and create the order.
  4. Fund only the deposit address generated for that order, using its exact asset and network.
  5. Save the order link and watch the outgoing XMR payout status before checking the receiving wallet.

For example, you can exchange native BTC for XMR or send native Solana USDC for Monero. The sending network belongs to the source asset; your payout address remains a Monero address. Use the exchange home to choose a different source.

Why Is the XMR Balance Not Visible Yet?

Work through the three separate records: the exchange order, its outgoing XMR transaction and the receiving wallet. The word “completed” on an exchange page should lead you to inspect its transaction record rather than assuming the wallet has already caught up.

Observation Likely next check
Order has not sent the payout Review its deposit, confirmation and processing stages
Payout has a Monero transaction ID Check that the order's destination matches your wallet address
Wallet is behind the network Allow the node and wallet to synchronize, then inspect incoming history
Incoming XMR appears but cannot be spent Check its unlock or confirmation state
Custodial balance is missing Compare the platform's XMR deposit rules and contact it with the transaction details

Monero wallets normally require 10 confirmations before newly received XMR is unlocked for spending. This is different from the exchange's planned 20-confirmation threshold for incoming XMR deposits on an XMR-to-stablecoin order. When you are receiving XMR as the payout, the wallet's own sync and unlock status are the relevant checks.

If You Restored a Wallet

A restored wallet must scan the chain from an appropriate restore height to discover older receipts. If the height is set after the payout's block, it can miss that transaction until you rescan from an earlier point. Use your wallet's supported restore or rescan controls rather than sharing the seed with an exchange or support agent.

The address-types guide explains primary, subaddress and integrated formats. For a delayed deposit sent by you, read the confirmations guide. The official Monero receiving guide and wallet reference cover wallet behavior in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate wallet for each XMR payout?

No. A self-custody wallet can generate multiple subaddresses under one wallet. You may use a new one to organize receipts without creating another seed.

Why does the order say “sent” while my wallet shows nothing?

The wallet may still be synchronizing, or the order destination may differ from the wallet you opened. Compare the transaction and address first.

Can I spend XMR immediately after it appears?

Newly received Monero is normally locked until its wallet confirmation requirement is met. Visible balance and unlocked balance are different.

Should I send my seed phrase to support to recover a missing payout?

No. Use the order ID, payout transaction ID and destination address for investigation. A seed phrase controls the wallet and is never needed by the exchange.
