Monero Wallet Addresses: Standard, Subaddresses and Integrated Addresses

A Monero address is the destination you share to receive XMR. Most wallet users should receive to a subaddress, while a primary address remains valid and an integrated address is usually supplied by a service for automated payment matching. The right choice is the address your own wallet or recipient platform displays for this particular deposit.

Which Monero Address Should You Use?

The address type matters less than using the exact address supplied by the intended recipient. A self-custody wallet can manage many subaddresses under the same wallet; a custodial platform may require a specific deposit instruction to credit your account.

Address type Typical appearance Best use Check before sending
Primary or standard Usually starts with 4; 95 characters on mainnet Main wallet address, including compatibility with older tools It is the recipient's current XMR address
Subaddress Usually starts with 8; 95 characters on mainnet Separate incoming payments within one wallet Copy the specific subaddress shown by the wallet
Integrated Usually starts with 4; 106 characters on mainnet Automated matching by a service Use the complete address supplied for this deposit

Prefixes and lengths are quick clues, not a substitute for wallet validation. A syntactically valid address can still belong to the wrong person, and a testnet address must not be used for a mainnet payout.

Primary Address Versus Subaddress

The primary address identifies the main wallet account. A subaddress also receives into that wallet, but you can label it for a particular payer or order. Using different subaddresses reduces the chance that a payer can link your separate receipts from the addresses you disclosed to them.

Integrated Address and Payment ID

An integrated address embeds a short payment ID used to identify a payment. That technical ID is different from the exchange's order ID. If a platform gives you an integrated address, copy the whole string; do not shorten it or replace it with your personal primary address.

How to Copy and Verify an XMR Receiving Address

Open the recipient's XMR receive screen immediately before creating an exchange. If the recipient is a platform, select its Monero deposit page and follow its current instructions rather than relying on an old saved address.

  1. Copy the address or scan its QR code from the intended XMR wallet.
  2. Paste it into the order and compare several characters at the start, in the middle and at the end against the wallet screen.
  3. Confirm that the order says XMR on Monero, not a wrapped token on another network.
  4. Save the order ID and destination displayed in the final summary.

Checking only the first and last characters can miss a clipboard replacement. The wallet's address validation checks its format and checksum, but only your comparison with the original source establishes that it is the intended recipient.

What If the Platform Shows Extra Deposit Details?

A custodial wallet may show an account-specific address, an integrated address or a separate instruction. Do not assume your own subaddress can stand in for its deposit details. Check the platform's minimum amount and whether it currently credits XMR before you create the exchange.

If an order has already been paid to the wrong address, preserve the order ID and payout transaction record, then contact the destination platform. An exchange cannot change a confirmed Monero payout after broadcast. For wallet balance questions, continue with how to receive XMR in a wallet.

Use the Address in an Exchange

For a source balance on TRON, exchange USDT TRC20 to XMR; for Ethereum native USDC, use the USDC ERC20 to XMR route. The exchange home lets you choose another sending asset. In every case the XMR address belongs on the receiving side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a subaddress create a separate Monero wallet?

No. It is another receive address under the same wallet and its incoming funds appear in that wallet. A separate seed creates a separate wallet.

Can I verify an address from its first character alone?

No. The prefix can hint at the type, but it does not identify the intended recipient. Compare the complete address with the wallet or platform that supplied it.

Is an order ID the same as a Monero payment ID?

No. An order ID tracks the exchange. A payment ID is a Monero-specific identifier that can be embedded in an integrated address.

Can I use a deposit address from an earlier exchange?

Use the current recipient instructions. A service may issue a new address or change how it credits deposits, so an older address is not a reliable substitute.
